We get results that make our country better
Together with the non-profit groups we work with, Fund for the Public Interest has a proven track record of success. Here are just two examples of the countless results we've helped win.
The Human Rights Campaign & the Fund: Standing up for equal rights
How many people do you need to change the way Americans think about equality? For the Human Rights Campaign (HRC), a good start was 750,000.
When HRC, America’s largest civil rights organization working for LGBT equality, wanted more people power, they called the Fund. HRC was a key backer of the Matthew Shepard and James Byrd, Jr., Hate Crimes Prevention Act and needed to ramp up support in advance of the vote on the bill.
Since 1996, HRC has partnered with the Fund to grow its membership base. Today they boast a grassroots force of over 1 million and a half members and supporters—and the Fund has been a key partner in that growth. We had the field presence—and the guts—to sign up members in the backyards of anti-gay rights politicians like Rick Santorum and Bill Frist. President Obama signed the bill into law in 2009.
Environment California & the Fund: Getting energy from clean sources
How much power can a single state get from the sun? Environment California had the audacity to find out by mapping a way to 1 million solar roofs.
In 2004, Environment California enlisted the Fund to launch this groundbreaking campaign. Over the next few years, our staff knocked on 200,000 doors and collected 10,000 signatures in support of what would become the nation’s biggest, boldest state solar program. In 2006, California adopted the Million Solar Roofs Initiative.
Today, California generates enough solar energy to power 250,000 homes, and the state is on pace to meet the goal of 1 million solar roofs by 2020 should pro- solar policies remain strong. The Fund remains key to Environment California’s push for more solar power.
