Environment California & the Fund: Getting energy from clean sources

How much power can a single state get from the sun? Environment California had the audacity to find out by mapping a way to 1 million solar roofs.

In 2004, Environment California enlisted the Fund to launch this groundbreaking campaign. Over the next few years, our staff knocked on 200,000 doors and collected 10,000 signatures in support of what would become the nation’s biggest, boldest state solar program. In 2006, California adopted the Million Solar Roofs Initiative.

Today, California generates enough solar energy to power 250,000 homes, and the state is on pace to meet the goal of 1 million solar roofs by 2020 should pro- solar policies remain strong. The Fund remains key to Environment California’s push for more solar power.

U.S. PIRG & the Fund: Reform where we need it most

Shady deals and a culture of excess on Wall Street helped tank the economy in 2008. U.S. PIRG saw the writing on the wall. For years they pushed for tighter controls and more transparency in the financial sector.

When the government bailed out banks and investment firms, the American people demanded answers. The time was ripe for reform and U.S. PIRG, thanks to years of membership building with the Fund, was ready to take the lead.

Money raised by the Fund made possible the research that exposed Wall Street hijinks and put U.S. PIRG organizers in the halls of power. Members recruited by the Fund gave U.S. PIRG the clout they needed to get members of Congress to listen.

It worked. U.S. PIRG was a key player in passing the 2010 Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act and creating the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. The win was recognized by The Hill newspaper as one of the top 10 lobbying victories of the year.
